3 de julio de 1973: David Bowie retiró a Ziggy Stardust, su alter ego más famoso, frente a 5000 fans atónitos en el Hammersmith Odeon de Londres. Ahora, la película y la banda sonora completamente restauradas se lanzarán por primera vez en su 50 aniversario. El renombrado cineasta D.A. Pennebaker (Monterey Pop, Bob Dylan – Don’t Look Back, Depeche Mode – 101) capturó el trascendental evento al filmar a Bowie & The Spiders From Mars entre bastidores y en el escenario. La restauración digital 4K de la nueva versión de la película ha sido supervisada por su hijo, Frazer Pennebaker, con audio remasterizado.
Aunque se filmó hace 50 años, la película no se vio durante más de una década. Sin embargo, la película y su banda sonora se han remasterizado recientemente con el popurrí de ‘The Jean Genie/Love Me Do’ y ‘Round And Round’ con la reincorporación del legendario Jeff Beck (recientemente fallecido); esta última pista hace su primera aparición. Ambas actuaciones fueron mezcladas recientemente por Tony Visconti, colaborador de Bowie desde hace mucho tiempo.
El programa contó con el famoso discurso de Bowie justo antes del bis final, ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll Suicide’, donde reveló que se retiraría de la personalidad de Ziggy Stardust. El impactante anuncio fue una sorpresa para todos los asistentes, incluidos los miembros de su banda, y fue la primera proclamación de este tipo en el rock and roll.
Cincuenta años después, Ziggy finalmente se hará global con una versión restaurada digitalmente de Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars: The Motion Picture que se proyectará en más de 1000 cines en todo el mundo.
El 3 de julio de 2023: el Eventim Apollo Hammersmith (anteriormente Odeon) albergará el estreno mundial de la versión recientemente restaurada de la película, justo el día que se cumple el 50 aniversario. La noche también incluirá una charla sobre el escenario con colaboradores de Bowie y músicos contemporáneos que precederá a la proyección de la película.
